The 2004 Festival of the American Liszt Society celebrates the 40th anniversary of the founding of the American Liszt Society. The Society was created in 1964 with Fernando Laires, David Kushner, and Robert Lee as founders. The membership of the Society includes dozens of diverse professions from performing artists to publishers to doctors and lawyers. Festivals of the Society have taken place throughout the United States and in Canada, as well as in Russia, China, Hungary, Brazil, and other countries.
This festival will provide a unique opportunity for all to hear Liszt’s major works for piano and orchestra played by outstanding solo artists with a superb orchestra conducted by Ian Hobson. The University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana is host this year for the festival, which convenes outstanding artist performers, scholars, and members of ALS. Liszt’s wide ranging interests encompassing solo works of supreme virtuosity, piano works of great poetry and spirituality, concertos, and the symphonic side of Liszt will be explored. Please consult the preliminary schedule of events found elsewhere in this brochure for details.
A Liszt Festival is an opportunity to hear music that is seldom heard juxtaposed with familiar music and with unfamiliar versions of compositions, which shed new light on the mind of the composer. It is an opportunity to visit the campus of an outstanding University of international prominence and to meet with colleagues from around the country and around the world who are active in music making and in scholarship. The informal atmosphere of the festivals and the high level of music making provide a comfortable and stimulating atmosphere in which to experience the sharing of ideas and feelings that emanate from the working of such a great philosophy as that of Franz Liszt.
We hope that as you view the schedule of events you will decide to join with us in the celebration of the 40th anniversary of this Society devoted to the spirit and philosophy of Liszt.
The University of Illinois School of Music is proud to sponsor the 2004 annual conference of the American Liszt Society. You are invited to join us for three extraordinary days of lectures, recitals, and concerts focusing on the music of Franz Liszt.
Featured on this year’s program will be a variety of world-renowned performers and scholars whose topics will range from lecture-presentations on specific repertoire and various aspects of Liszt’s creative genius to duo-piano, chamber music, and solo recitals. Of special interest will be the two concerts including all of the works written or arranged by Liszt for piano and orchestra. Eight soloists will be joined by members of Sinfonia da Camera, with Ian Hobson conducting.
